In an opinion article for the French newspaper Liberion, the former French president François Hollande and the University of the Chief of Aix-Marsella requested the creation of a special refugee status for US researchers who seek to come to France.

The Chief of the University of Aix-Marsella of France and the former French president and current socialist deputy François Hollande has proposed that the French government creates a special status called ‘scientific refugee’ for budget cuts and placements based in the United States.

The proposal occurred in the form of an opinion article in the Libraration of the Daily French, in which the president of the University of the South French, Éric Berton and the former president wrote “the investigators forced to exile by the administration Trump Must Rightnet in his account.

“Crucial research is being suppressed, prevented and even censored, and this worrying trend is spreading to the doors of Europe,” they wrote.

In a separate interview with the local media France 3 Paca, Berton highlighted the group’s relationship with “erase databases”, namely those related to climate change.

“Ebrase of this work endangers future climatic predictions and has an impact on global science. In this type of political crisis, three groups are mainly affected: the opponents of the regime, journalists and academics,” Berton told France 3.

Could the government create this state?

It would be possible for the French government to believe a status of ‘scientific refugee’, but Parliament would have to be proposed and voted by Parliament.

As things are, researchers based in the United States who think about moving to France could qualify for other residence status options.

The University said it was intended to make 10-15 million euros available to house about 15 American scientists. The first wave of applications closed at the end of March.

Around 300 applications were received, many of them from ‘”Experienced researchers about the 45 years who know they would have to stop their investigation or find degrees against current policy,” Berton told The French Press.

At the beginning of March, the Minister of Education and Higher Research of France, Philippe Baptiste, wrote a letter to the country’s institutions that urged them to consider the welcome to scientists who abandon the United States due to financing cuts.

Until now, two other French universities: the Power UPLEC Engineering School and the L’Ar University Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL) have also announced that they would join the ‘Safe Place for Science’ initiative, by offering financing and research spaces.

Meanwhile, Sorbonne University also told the French press that they were considering the possibility that renowned foreign scientists “virtual or physically” are recognized.
