Is Germany on the road to secularzation? In 2024, for the first time, the country registered more people with religious affiliation than Catholics and Protestants, according to the Weltanschauungen research group in Deutschland, which bases their findings on publications of the German Bishops conference, therefore, Germany had 47% of atheists, compared to 45% Catholics and Protestants, 4% Muslims In 1990, only 22% of the Germans identified as non -religious. By way of comparison, non-religious individuals have been in most France for several years, with an INEE study conducted in 2019-2020 that shows 51% of the population.

These data confirm the trends observed in the long term in Germany, as in the rest of Europe, partly exacerbated by demographic aging. And these trends accelerate. In total, the two main Christian churches lost approximately 1 million members last year in Germany. Experts extrapolate that in two years, people without religious affiliation will represent more than 50% of the German population.
