An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit the Marmara Sea near Western outskirts of Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23, authorities said, and the impact was felt in the largest city in Turkey where people rushed into the streets. “There was an earthquake or a 6.2 magnitude in Silivri, Marmara Mar, Istanbul,” said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in X, and added that he felt in the surrounding provinces. The initial earthquake at 12:49 PM (0949 GMT) was followed by three others with magnitudes or 4.4 to 4.9, the AFAD Disaster Management Agency of Türkiye published in X.
As the buildings were trembling, people rushed to the streets where many people with worried looked at their mobile phones to obtain information or made calls, said a correspondent of the Agence France Presse (AFP).
There were no immediate reports of anyone or killed or buildings collapsing in the extensive city of 16 million people, said the authorities of the city and the regional governor’s office. “Until now, we have no information on the collapse of the buildings,” said the governor’s office, urging people to avoid any structure that may have damaged the legs in tremors.
“So far serious cases have been reported after the earthquake in Istanbul,” said the municipality of Istanbul in X.
The tremors could feel as far as Bulgaria, according to the AFP journalists in the Sofia capital.
