The EU figures and the Eurodiputados have congratulated the new Pope, Leo XIV, for his choice.
He is the first American to ascend Peter’s headquarters.
His choice, said parliamentarians, is a moment of global importance.
“A bridge between continents, traditions and generations.”
The ECR group in the EU Parliament, in a statement, said:
“We looked at his obvious integrity, his moral authority, his deep pastoral experience and his call to unity in a divided world. The ancient ceremony that chose the new Pontiff left us in history, but also left us to the FAUTURA.
“As conservatives, we believe that the future of Europe must remain rooted in Christian values that shape our civilization: human dignity, truth, responsibility and freedom.
“We celebrated the elections of Pope Leo XVI and we join millions of faithful by wishing Serenity and strength.”
Other comments came from the Senior Italian member Nicola ProCaccini, a Eurodiput since 2019, who said:
“Pope Leo XIV carries with him the hopes of millions. As Europeans, we look at his voice to remind us of the Christian roots of our civilization, and the force they sacrifice in times of confusion and doubt.”
ECR co-leader, Patryk Jaki, also said:
“We congratulate Pope Leo XIV with respect and sincerity. We wish him strength and wisdom in his mission, at a time when the voice of the Church is vital.”
The head of the CE commission, Ursula von der Leyen, he said,
“We sincerely congregate his holiness Leo XIV in his choice as Pope and Head of the Catholic Church.
“Millions of Europeans are inspired daily in the lasting commitment of the Church with peace, human dignity and mutual understanding between nations.”
She added,
“We are sure that Pope Leo XIV will have his voice on the global stage to promote shared thesis values and encourage unity in the search for a more and compassionate world.
“The European Union is ready to work closely with the Holy See to face global challenges and nourish a spirit of solidarity, respect and kindness.”
She concluded,
“We wish that the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV be guided by wisdom and strength, since he directs the Catholic community and inspires the world through his commitment to peace and dialogue.”
His comments were shared in the same statement from the President of the EU Council, Antonio Costa.
