Of course, the wine could be the driver of choice in the Parisian scene, but did you know that you can also make your own Geneva just a few steps from the Louvre?

Whether it is a gin connoisseur or simply look for something totally different than to do in Paris, this experience is a very fun and memorable finding.

Disclosure: I was invited to attend a gynebras manufacturing workshop in English in The distillerie of l’Arebre sec. As always, all opinions are mine.

An innovative gin distillery in the center of Paris

Located in Paris, in a quiet street a few steps from the Louvre Museum, a microdistillería is hidden in a small bright blue doors. Welcome The distillerie of l’Arebre secWhere industrial and land vibrations report together in a beautiful study space.

Before 2013, distilleries were prohibited from the city due to fire safety problems. The distillerie of l’Arebre sec It is only the fifth distillery to open in Paris since the prohibition was raised. Getting this adventure in operation was not a small feat for the three co -founders.

From the beginning of this project, ensuring a place and designing a space that could be open to the public was a driving factor. The curious visitors are invited to discover and experience the gin distillation closely behind the scene.

Distillery also welcomes creative collaborations, and have already been associated with other local companies and businessmen. For example, they associated with a pastry chef and collected vanilla beans that he had used to bake. These vanilla grains were given a second life when they joined the creation of a limited editing gin L’Etoile.

The glass jars of the botanists were aligned at the counter of the Botanical Room to make our selections for our own Geneva.

All ingredients used in the production of its gin, from water to botanists, are obtained in France. Whether it is a limited edition bottle or its permanent gin, Charlotte’s ink, you get a gin that is 100% French!

The distillerie of l’Arebre sec It offers tours and tastings, as well as a workshop to make your own Geneva! Experiences can be reserved in French or in English.

The gin distillation workshop experience

Part one: the rules of the gin

With a welcome drink in the hand (non -alcoholic with herbal notes), we started the experience in the fixed room. Here our small group of approximately 10 gathered to look at the beautiful copper pot, the show star.

The atmosphere was informal, since we listed to clean explanations of the gin manufacturing process. The questions were welcome, and our guide of the co -founders also surprised us about our previous knowledge!

Back in the workshop room, we took our seats and learned about the ingredients typically used in the production of Geneva. I loved that this experience was practical. We have to touch, smell and try the 4 base ingredients that The distillerie of l’Arebre sec Uses: juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root and orris root.

Interestingly, Juniper is the only botanist that is required to make the spirit consultant. There are very few rules for Geneva, which surprised me!

Berry of juniper in an open hand

The dry juniper berry knew less pine than I expected and had a citrus profile. I don’t think he is eating them, but it was pleasant enough! Speaking of snacks, we obtained a beautiful plate of snacks and a couple of cocktails later held us for the work ahead.

Part two: make your own gin

To the part of the practical laboratory of the workshop …

When I confirm my reservation for this workshop, I was a bit nervous to be the only person to create a terrible gin. It is a great pressure to be an answer for the taste of an entire bottle, right?

The botanists available were presented to us on a recipe card with 4 identified flavor profiles: floral, fruity, herbal and spicy. We were giving some tips and guidelines on how to choose and balance the flavor profile. The task in question was much more manageable in this framework.

And I have to admit: I felt a bit like a scientist (in the best way!) Gathering ingredients in my beaker and have my owner a small distillation work station. Most participants came with a couple, so they shared their mini Alembic.

After distillation was completed, we bottled our production with water to dilute the alcohol content. So it was time to work to make a label!

It is recommended that you wait approximately 3 weeks before trying your gin. This gives alcohol a chans to completely combine with water.

Good news: I can confirm with confidence that my Geneva was far from being terrible. If you like your creation, you can ask for another bottle of the distillery by providing your recipe!

Why visit a gin distillery in Paris?

In general, I thought that this gin manufacturing workshop was a very pleasant and fun experience. I love it, it is really a complete experience, from learning about the process to the sample of the distillery products to make your own gin to customize the bottle label.

Just although I did it alone, given the small size of the group, it was easy to chat with ethers that were there with partners and good friends. A couple was there celebrating a birthday, while two friends were traveling together and only looking for something different than doing after visiting Paris several times. People had different levels of appreciation and knowledge of Geneva and spirits.

A gin manufacturing workshop could be an excellent alternative to the typical wine tasting that most people plan on a trip to France. It is also a perfect activity if you are looking for a small duration of inactivity, an occupied itinerary that explores Paris. You will feel the tasks very well and you will go out with a unique memory of Paris. If you do not have time for the 2.5 -hour workshop, they also sacrifice a distillery tour and a gin flavor experience that lasts an hour.
