Lagaan (2001) by Aamir Khan is still a timeless jewel and a milestone in Indian cinema, winning hearts only decades later. Recently, Ashutosh Gowariker director revealed that before Amitabh Bachchan agreed to narrate the film, he warned Aamir that each movie had lent their voice to fail. Grateful, Big B’s ‘warning’ did not come true, and Lagaan became a cult classic.
In a shared video on the YouTube channel by Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker spilled an interesting story behind the scene about taking Amitabh Bachchan on board as the movie narrator. Gowariker revealed that the superstar did not say yes immediately and, in fact, issued a warning. “He told Aamir that, however, I give an off voice to the movie, that the film does not work. The film fails. If it is willing to run that risk, but keep in mind that I said before,” the director recalled.
Fortunately, Aamir Khan was not harmed. He laughed, he showed Big B the film, and once he made the vision and understood the unique narrative style, he agreed to lend his voice. And the rest, as they say, is history.
In addition, in the same interview, director Ashutosh Gowariker shared how the voice of Amitabh Bachchan completely changed the opening of Lagaan, raising the narrative and making him feel alive. Big B’s narration served as a powerful entrance point in the world of the film.
