Clem Burke, the drummer for a long time for the pioneer New Wave Blondie band, died, the band announced on Monday, April 7. He was 70 years old. The band said Burke died after a “private battle against cancer.”
“Clem was not just a drummer; it was Blondie’s beat,” said Instagram statement. “His talent, energy and passion for music were unmatched, and their contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable.”
Originally in New Jersey, Burke appeared in all Blondie albums, joining in 1975 shortly after Debbie Harry and Chris Stein founded the band behind seminal successes such as “Heart of Glass.”
Burke was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with his band bands in 2006. He worked with many other historical artists through the race, including Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, the Ramones and the Eurythmics.
“Clem’s influence extended far beyond Blondie,” said the band’s statement. “Its influence and contributions have covered decades and genres, leaving an indelible brand in each project of which it was part. Godspeed, Dr. Burke.”
