Founded in the thirteenth century on Mount Athos of Greece, the monastery houses monks of more than one country of doxes, including France, China, the United States and Lebanon.
Also known as Simonopetra, or “Simon’s Rock”, the monastery is part of the autonomous and male monastic peninsula in northern Greece. While only orthodox men can join the brotherhood, male visitors or other religions are welcome.
His abbot, Archimandrit Eliseos, says that the monastery reflects a centenary ecumenical spirit rooted in the Byzantine tradition, where shared faith transcends national borders.
