Water loss in Kampenhout stream sparks urgent call

Kampenhout (Brussels morning newspaper) – Kampenhout urgently urgently urgently urgently dries, leaving fish in trouble. Castor’s tunnels are blamed for severe water drainage.

The fish have problems since the water level is very low. The volunteers tried to save some of the fish this morning.

A worried citizen or Kampenhout, Belgium, called Denise Vander Wyden (N-VA), a municipal councilor.

“That is why we will come today to release those fish and we will try to put them in a pound aliso. It is distressing to see them like this. I do not know that we can save all the fish.”

The reason behind the low water level in the Molenbeek is unknown to volunteers, but the mayor of the Kris Leags team is more knowledgeable.

“I don’t live away from there”,

The mayor says.

“The fish in the Molenbeek, unfortunately, is a story that is not new. In the upper sections of the Molenbeek, Beavers cava tunnels, along the water of the stream flows flow. Those beavers have done their best.”

“The current then overflows in the Reisembek, which makes the liter full of water and the Molenbeek is virtually dry. We have contacted the Agency for Nature and Forests, and also the people of the province handle the river roads, to find a solution for this.

Leapts says.

And so, a part of nature must be helped by backing to another.

“It is something contradictory. We want to fight the mortality of the fish, but the beavers are protected animals and you must also let them do their things. We perform to assemble our heads and find a structural solution for it.

The mayor concludes.

What impact does the low water level have on local fish populations in Kampenhout?

Reproduction of young fish and survival that defend themselves in adequate habitat, partially vital spawning and nursery habitats in shallow coastal areas, which decrease by decreasing the volume of water.

The fish suffer stress or that as a result of hypoxia or only anoxia, which is often caused by decreasing dissolved oxygen due to less deep water.

The fastest heating of less deep waters can be harmful to cold water fish and disturb the refuge areas provided by thermal stratification.

Aquatic life is harmed by algae flowers, which reduce water clarity and decrease oxygen levels even more when nutrients are concentrated in less water.

The fish struggle to survive as a result of these combined circumstances, which could cause anguish and, if the conditions, Wesen die catastrophic.
