At least 11 people, including three children, were killed in New Delhi on Saturday, April 20, after a residential building collapsed on the outskirts of the Indian capital, reports and local authorities said. The incident occurred in the first hours in the Northeast district of the city that mostly houses migrant workers, with rescue teams by digging through the rubble during the day.

Eleven people were declared dead, the NDTV channel reported, they thought that another 11 were rescued and tasks to the hospital. Five were still in treatment, the network said. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said he was “sad for the loss of lives.” “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones,” Modi’s office published in X. “That the Kured recover soon.” President Droupadi Murmu, who lives in the official palace just 20 kilometers from the site, said that “the death of many people, including women and children, is very sad.”

The ruling party Bharatiya Janata de Modi recently won the state elections of Delhi for the first time in almost three decades. The cause of collapse was not known immediately. Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra blamed corruption in the municipal government, led by a rival political party, because such construction collapses, saying in X: “The construction of such illegal buildings continues in full swing.” “The survey of all these illegal buildings is necessary, strict action against them is required,” he added.

Local media reports said the four -story building “collapsed like a card pile.” Construction collapses are frequent in India, and illegal structures, or the home of migrant workers, are common in large cities.
