At least 18 people died and more than 120 were Kurados when a roof fell into a nightclub in the capital of the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, April 8, authorities said.
The teams were looking for possible survivors in the rubble in Jet Set in Santo Domingo, said Juan Manuel Ménddez, director of the Emergency Operations Center. “We assume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until one person remains under those rubble,” he said.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi, was one of the victims. Meanwhile, the injured include the Merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was a performance when the roof collapsed, authorities said.
Its manager, Enrique Paulino, whose shirt was spotted with blood, told journalists on the scene that the concert revolved shortly before midnight, with the roof collapsing almost an hour later, killing the group’s saxophonist. “It happened very fast. I managed to throw myself into a corner,” he said, he initially thought it was an earthquake.

It was not clear immediately what caused the roof to collapse. President Luis Abinader wrote in X that all rescue agencies are “working tirelessly” to help those affected. “We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred in the Jet Set nightclub. We have bone after the minute incident per minute that happened,” hey. Abinader arrived at the scene and hugged those who were looking for friends and family, some with tears running down their faces. Hey, don’t talk to journalists.
