Great Britain and France on Wednesday, April 16, they promised to maintain pressure on criminal gangs in Haiti through sanctions. The poorest country of the western hemisphere, Haiti is unstable political and the country’s stripes, including parts of the capital, are under rival armed gangs.
“The United Kingdom and France are concerned about the reports of criminal gangs that coordinate to further destabilize the Presidential Council for Transition of Haiti,” Britain and France said in a statement by Jint.
“We are committed to the pressure of caressing those who seek to destabilize Haiti through the implementation of sanctions, and ask the authorities to implement the penalty regime in Haiti,” the statement added.
The UN Security Council in October extended an embargo on arms over Haiti, urging UN Member States to block “weapons and related material of all kinds” to enter the country. The UN sanctions list includes seven leaders of Haiti gangs.
Armed groups have been fighting for the control of Prince Port-Au and clashes are intensive in the last week as rival gangs try to establish new territories. At least 1,518 people died and 572 wounds in the duration of Haiti the first three months of this year, due to gang attacks, safety and violence force operations by personal defense groups, according to the United Nations.
