What will be the cost for the French economy of trade than the United States? “Trump’s policy could cost us more than 0.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP),” said Prime Minister François Bayrou in an interview published on Sunday, April 6, in Le Parisien. If this figure turns out to be precise, it would represent a significant blow to the French economy: growth, which reached a modest 1.1% in 2024, it was not expected to exceed 0.7% this year, according to the latest estimates of the bank of France.

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), which does not carry out long -term projections, expects a growth gain or 0.4% in mid -2025. It does not require that an expert see that a half -point fall in GDP would leave the French growth on knees, with cascade effects. “The risk of employment loss is absolutely important, as well as that of an economic deceleration and stop in investments,” Bayrou said. After Trump’s “Day of Liberation”, when the tariffs, Patrick Martin, the chief of the federation of employers in France were announced, estimated that “the sinks of thousands of jobs were threatened” in France.
