A leader of the Lebanese Islamist group aligned Jamaa Islamiya was among two people killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon on Tuesday, April 22, Israel’s group and army said. Israel has continued to carry out regular attacks on Lebanon despite a November truce with the Hezbollah militant group that sought to stop more than a year of hostilities, including two months of total war.
The civil defense of Lebanon said that “an Israeli dron pointed to a car” near the coastal city of Damour, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Beirut, and rescuers recovered the body of a man. An AFP photographer saw the carbonized remains of a car on the scene. The Lebanese army cordoned off the area and forensic teams carried out an inspection.
The Lebanese Islamist group Jamaa Islamiya in a statement announced the death of Hussein Atwi, calling him “academic leader and university professor” and saying that an Israeli drones strike “attacked his car while traveling to his workplace in Beirut.” The Israeli army said the Air Force had “eliminated” Atwi, describing it as “a significant terrorist in the terrorist organization of Jamaa Islamiya.”
Jamaa Islamiya, closely linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Hezbollah of Lebanon, the responsibility of multiple attacks against Israel was attributed before the top fire on November 27.
‘Israeli territory tries to infiltrate
Also on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health of Lebanon said that a strike of “Israeli enemy” in the tire district of the southern Lebanon killed a person. The Israeli army said the Air Force “eliminated” a “local commander” of Hezbollah in the same area.
The Israeli army said that Atwi by Jamaa Islamiya had been “involved in the planning and progress of terrorist activity from Lebanon to Israeli territory” and had operated “in coordination with Hamas in Lebanon.” He said he had “carried out rocket attacks, a coordinated terrorist infrastructure … and advanced attempts to infiltrate Israeli.”
Hamas in a statement condemned the “criminal sionist strike” that killed Atwi and extended his condolences to Jamaa Islamiya leadership. Hezbollah in a statement condemned the strike, without saying if one of its members was killed in the second incursion, also criticizing the “failure of the countries by sponsoring the CEAASEFIRE agreement.”
The United States presides over a committee, which also includes France, in charge of supervising the truce. According to the agreement, Hezbollah had to get his fighters north of the Litani River of Lebanon and dismantle any recurring military infrastructure in the south.

Israel had to withdraw all its forces from the south of Lebanon, but the troops remain in five positions that it considers “strategic.” The Lebanese authorities have said that the Israeli fire has killed some 190 people from Alto El Fuego. After the launches of rockets not claimed in Israel at the end of March, Lebanon’s army said last week that he had arrested several library and Palestinian suspects, while a security official said they included three members of Hamas.
