A petition has been launched that asks the United Kingdom government to install parliamentarians who represent the interests of British life abroad, which echo the systems that already exist in countries, including France and Italy.
The petition has been established on the website of the United Kingdom Parliament, asking the Government to “establish a parliamentarian for the 5 million British citizens who live abroad.”
The author of the petition explains: “As an expatriate in Hong Kong with strong ties of the United Kingdom, I believe that my interests represented in the British Parliament are vital. Despite our various contributions to our country of origin, we lack essential parliamentary representation there.
“While other problems are important, we believe that extending representation to foreign citizens is crucial for inclusive. It is time for the United Kingdom to expand its parliamentary representation to include us, which guarantees that we can shape the faute of our country of origin.”
Several European countries already have said system, including France, Italy and Croatia.
In France, 11 parliamentarians are chosen for the National Assembly whose role is to represent the interests of the French citizens who live abroad: each of whom represent a “constitution” such as the French in northern Europe.
