Paris Saint-Germain saw his undefeated record in Ligue 1 this season finally ended in a house loss at home against Nice on Friday, April 25, just before his confrontation of semifinals of the Champions League against Arsenal. The PSG hoped to become the first team to complete a French high -flight season without losing a game, but Morgan Sanson scored twice for Nice since visitors claimed the three points against the game. Fabian Ruiz had brought the PSG level at the end of the first half, canceling Sanson’s first game. However, Sanson scored only 22 seconds in the second half, and Youssouf ndayishimye later went to put the 3-1.
“For me, the result is not fair, but that is football, you have to accept it,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique, who saw his team dominate the game with 76% possession and more than 30 shots on the door. The PSG had been undefeated in 30 games of Ligue 1 this season, and had not lost any of its last 41 games against the French opposition from a 3-defeat against Toulouse on May 12 last year.
The results that PSG, which had already secured a fourth consecutive title of Ligue 1 at the beginning of this month, fails to match the record of the undefeated career since the beginning of a French season. That record is still in the hands of Nantes, who was undefeated for 32 games before suffering his only defeat on the way to win the title in 1994/95.
The PSG must now quickly put them in this defeat while they go to London for the first leg of their champions League the last four draw against Arsenal on Tuesday, before the return to Parc Des Princes on May 7.
‘Not worried’
“The possibility of winning a more records was a goal for us in recent weeks,” Enrique admitted. “It was like that, but in no way changes our goal of continuing in the Champions League and reaching the final.”
The PSG had begun with a complete force alignment, but was denied by a series of excellent salvages by the good goalkeeper Marcin Bulka. “What I saw would take it again in London on Tuesday and on the return section,” Enrique added. “I am not worried at all. When you have a team that does not speculate, that tries to attack, press, not stop running, but does not risk and the opposition goalkeeper makes some incredible salvations, well, that is football and I accept it.”
Sanson marked his first start of the season after an injury to put Nice ahead just so that Ruiz would shoot from the assistance of Ousmane Dembélé to match before the break. Sanson then adjusted his body to end magnificently from a Jonathan Clauss immediately after the restart, and Ndayishimye went to a free kick of Badredin Bouanani with 20 minutes remaining.
Victory is a great boost for its possibilities to qualify for the next season champions league, since they go up to fourth place and are behind Monaco thirdly only in the goals difference. Marseille in second is just a better point. The three best teams in Ligue 1 are classified directly for the phase of the League of the Champions League next season, with fourth income in the preliminary rounds.
