It is a scene that surprised diplomats worldwide. On the morning of February 25, 2022, only 24 hours after the beginning of Russian aggression in Ukraine, Pope Francis visited the Embassy of Russia, located in Via della Conciliazione near the Vatican. According to the statement published after this visit, he wanted to “express his group regarding the war in Ukraine.” This clumsy movement, which broke with diplomatic conventions, was the first of a series of false steps, errors in the trial and ambiguities of Jorge Bergoglio about the Russia-Ukraine war. Or all the international matters that the Argentine Pope had handled the duration of 12 years pontificate, the war caused by the invasion of Russia of Ukraine was one of the most challenging.

Until May 2022, Francis repeatedly requested the end of the fight, refusing to recognize the responsibility of Vladimir Putin and Russia. Promoting a resolution of the conflict through dialogue, Hey expressed the desire to see Vladimir Putin first before traveling to kyiv. Unfortunately, in the face of Russian president’s refusal to respond to his calls to mediation, Pope Angelly publicly regretted his position, stating that he would continue to “insist” anyway.
