The British Environmental Activist Just Stop Oil celebrated its final demonstration in London on Saturday, April 26, ending three years of high -profile climatic protests as they moved away from civil disobedience.
Several hundred followers walked peacefully through the center of the British capital, from Parliament to the headquarters of the giant Petroleum and Gas shell, where they removed their high -display orange vests.
The group announced in March that it would stop its protests that shout headlines, arguing that it had achieved its initial goal to prevent Britain from approaching new oil and gas projects.
More than 3,000 Petroleum protesters Just Stop have been arrested since it was founded in 2022 and 11 or they are currently in jail, including the 58 -year -old co -founder Roger Hallam. Five more will be sentenced in May.
The acrobatics by their activists included attacking the “Sunflower” painting of Vincent Van Gogh with tomato soup and clicking on the historic smooth Stonehenge with orange paint powder. They also interrupted theater and sports events, including tennis games in Wimbledon. Over the years, the action has brought the condemnation of politicians, police and some sections of the public.
But the official, the group claimed a victory after the United Kingdom Labor Government stopped new oil and gas exploration licenses in the North Sea. However, childbirth has been distanced from just stopping oil. Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticized his actions and said that protesters should face all the force of the law.
‘Repression makes it more difficult to mobilize’
Mel Carrington, a spokeswoman for the protest group, said that although his actions had been “very effective to get the attention of the press”, the re -election of climate change of climate change Donald Trump as president had hindered his work. “Repression makes it more difficult to mobilize, and the external environment has changed,” he told AFP.
Just Stop Oil has been shy about his future strategy, but he has said that “he will continue to tell the truth in court, speak for our political prisoners and call the oppressive antiprotesta laws of the United Kingdom.” “In the background, we are working with other groups (similar) … to develop a strategy for what comes next,” said Carrington.
