I recently reread Laurie Lee’s memories Cider with Rosiewhich recounts his early life in a duration of the Gloudeshire village and after World War I. Among other local personalities, he describes the two older women who live next, one above the other. ‘There are above and’ er ‘exist in a state of mutual antagonism, never speaking. They died within a week of each other, their enmity had kept them.
Laurie Lee’s neighbors were not related, but they reminded me of me or two sisters, both now dead, who lived in our area. His relationship never reached the level of antipathy described by Laurie Lee, but they had their moments.
Let’s call them Nadine and Odette (not their real names). A few years were born in the 1930s, the only children of a sheep breeding couple. Nadine and Odette walked to school in the nearest town, several kilometers away. When they were not at school, they protected the sheep in the fields around the farm.

Different lifestyles
After their education, the roads of the sisters diverged. Nadine, the older sister, married a local man (after having had an option between him and another suitor, apparently), and play on the family farm.
Odette became a teacher and moved. She is possible to marry a rich man with his own factory. When they retire, they settled in a rich city until Odette decided that they should resort to their roots here.
Odette retained the instincts of the school school until the end. After his retirement, he went through the town to talk. This always involved the counting of something, for example, the name of a French dish, and then Asing if we understood what it was. If we said yes, she would answer sharply: “What is it then?” This has become one of our phrases.
Both women had A very well Trempé (A strong character), and each one spoke freely in a resonant voice. For that reason, they don’t always see themselves. I imagine Neith asked for his words if it were a disagreement. In fact, some people said they were not spoken. This was true, since you told something, the other would know in a nano-second.
Neighborhood watch
The two liked to know what was happening, also known as Nosy. Nadine would stop on the balcony of her farm and train a large pair of binoculars in the surrounding area. A kind of rustic or CCTV version and probable more information.

Once, I drove attacks with a friend who was staying. Since my husband was out and my friend had short hair, Nadine’s antennas began to greet him madly. In a few minutes, she and Odette had appeared. Its pretext was to show me some old photos of local people. I suspect they were really waiting to catch me in flagrant with a man.
On another occasion, I decided to go to the movies, again in the absence of my husband. I went to see Nadine the next day, and she interrogated me about my destination the previous equation. When I explained, she exclaimed: “Et la télé?“In other words, I should be happy with very limited television entertainment (at that time) instead of galivating on mine.
Different but similar
In addition to their shared features and the fact that both were short bones, it was difficult to imagine that they were sisters. Nadine was rounded and several front teeth was lost. She never walked anywhere. “I’ve walked enough in my life,” he said. Odette was intelligent, well dressed and touched a daily constitutional to stay in the adjustment.
Living a sedentary lifestyle inevitably led to a decrease in Nadine’s health, although it retained its firm character. A fall further reduced her mobility, and she died before her eldest husband.
We continue to see his younger sister in the town, but we could say that everything was either with her either. Odette rejected the treatment and died two years after his sister.
Nadine and Odette were the last generation in living the son of rustic life that the French field novels often represent (and romantic). The rural world was changing quickly. Nadine stayed on earth. The only time he left the area was to visit the duration of Paris his honeymoon. Odette was more adventurous. Even so, she was still a country country.
Regardless of the differences in their lifestyles and, despite certain family disagreements, which is not my place to relate, the two sisters were closer than anyone knew. In a fun way, I miss them both.
